Making Partners of Enemies

“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”   Nelson Mandela

Returning to Sydney not long ago, I was struck by the rift in our communities.

Especially with the Lebanese community – this was a political football that the media loved to kick around.

Nothing positive looked like it was being done.

The threat of terrorism was used to feed fear and xenophobia, pretty much the same way it was done with our Greek, Italian, Chinese and Vietnamese fellow citizens when they first were noticed living amongst the status quo.

It always takes time to integrate.  And this time is best spent building on people’s natural decency, humanity and desire for a better life.  There are some great things that are being done, that the media don’t think is worth telling you about.

That’s why I’m writing  you this post.

You see, that wasn’t just a great quote from Nelson Mandela – that was the theme of a recent interview at South Australia University with a former Irish President; Mary McAllese.

This is an hour and a half program, yes – it’s long,  but it’s a master class in what it takes to take the pathway of inclusiveness, peace and positivity.

Mary McAllese is also a fascinating speaker.

What enemy can you make a partner of?
